Design

The functions within the KTF design module provide powerful Horizontal and Vertical design tools plus the combining of the two together with a range of 3D String functions. These tools are suitable for Estate road layouts, Highways, Junctions, Roundabouts, Road improvement schemes and cycle tracks etc. Considerable use is made of 2D Polylines to represent horizontal and vertical alignments which enables designs to be made with a great deal of flexibility. Design data is stored in two main file types - .vtg for the vertical geometry extracted from a 2D Polyline on a long section and .stg to store the definition of road widths and gradients for channels, kerbs and footpaths etc. The Design routines are not just road specific but are intended to have a broad range of applications including Quarries, Landfill, Car parks, Sports pitches and water related design.

The sequence of these menu items reflects to some extent the typical order of use but the whole concept is that KTF is a collection of tools. The use of the menu items in this module will be closely combined with those in the base and ground modelling modules. Like in the use of CAD there is often more than one way to achieve any one specific design operation.
