Horizontal Alignment

Typically a 2D Polyline representing a proposed road centre-line (but may be a channel etc.).

Vertical Alignment

Typically a 2D Polyline with tangential arcs representing a proposed alignment constructed on a long section. The vertical alignment is stored as a .vtg file that is output by menu item Design, Vertical, Extract geometry.

Master String

This is a concept that only exists when a horizontal and vertical alignment are combined. It is from the Master String that Design Strings such as the 3D centre-line and channels are related.

String (or Design String)

These are the 3D centre-line, channels, kerbs and verges etc. in most cases defined by their relationship to the Master String or each other. The Design, Strings menu items will output strings as 3D Polylines (and also section files and reports).

String file

This stores a number of strings and their horizontal and vertical relationships to the Master String and each other as a .stg file. This file is created and edited by menu item Design, Strings,Define or Edit.

Road Surface

Surface defined by 1. Projecting at right angles from a Master String at specified gradient or 2. Two Strings. See menu item Design, Strings, Drape onto Road surface.
