During any typical session a number of files will be written to the project folder to store sections, ground models, vertical alignments and other road design related information. A logical file naming system will help manage the various files created. Some files (e.g. string files) may not be specific to one project and should be saved at an appropriate location. The main files used (in the sequence of a typical training course) are :-
.sek
Section or cross sections (created from drawing entities, models and design functions)
.kgm
Ground model. Mathematical representation of an existing or proposed surface as a number of triangles. Models are created from drawing entities or .xyz files and are also used in analytical applications.
.vtg
Vertical alignment geometry. Created by menu item Design, Vertical, Extract geometry
.stg
Design string definitions created by menu item Design, Strings, Define or Edit. Stores the relationship between the Master String and one or many design strings such as centre, channels, kerbs, verges fixed by offset and gradient etc.
Note that no KTF files are linked or related in a dynamic way to any drawing or other file.
Other files include :-
.caf
Colour allocation file used to store user defined real colours related to model Z values used in Ground Modelling, Analysis and Colour mapping, Z value.
.ele
Stores elevation band colour assignments relating model Z values to user defined AutoCAD colour numbers. Created by Ground Modelling, Analysis and Colour mapping, Z value.
.hou
House corner co-ordinates.
.hzg
Stores horizontal alignment geometry and may include transitions.
.kdr
Design report files from a number of menu items in Design, Strings.
.lsc
Horizontal alignment chainage data (e.g.) every 10 metres output by menu item Design, Horizontal, Extract geometry.
.lst
Horizontal alignment elements (IPs, bearings etc.) output by menu item Design, Horizontal, Extract geometry.
.sky
ZVI target data, visual barriers and parameters.
.txt
Simple ascii format in columns to store Easting, Northing, Level, Point no. and Feature code.
