These String Design functions provide powerful solutions for the 3D design of new roads, improvement schemes, junctions, widening and urban renewal related road projects. One of the underlying principals is the combination of the 2D layout or plan geometry (e.g. a 2D Polyline representing a Horizontal Alignment or channel) and the corresponding Vertical Alignment design represented as a 2D Polyline drawn on a section and stored as a .vtg file. The plan or layout drawing may be a different drawing to the one including sections. Note that the horizontal to vertical relationship is not one to one but a number of alternative Vertical Alignments may be related to a Horizontal Alignment.

 

The first four menu items use a string file and are suitable for new roads with the other menu items providing the tools for widenings, junctions, non-standard geometry, simple roundabouts and complex estate road design etc.
